Walmart Referral Fees by Category, and the Price Lines That Change Them

Walmart referral fee dropping from 20 percent to 5 percent at the $250 jewelry threshold

Direct answer: Walmart referral fees run from 3 percent to 20 percent depending on category and price. Every guide quotes that range and stops.

What almost none of them say is that ten categories change rate at a price threshold, and the new rate applies to the whole sale price.

A jewelry piece at $250.00 pays 20 percent. At $250.01 it pays 5 percent.

All figures below come from Walmart’s published referral fee schedule, fetched 25 August 2026.

Most sellers price against the competition. Almost nobody prices against the fee schedule, which is published, free to read, and takes two minutes to check.

How Walmart referral fees actually work

Three things decide what you pay.

  • The category. Personal computers pay 6 percent. Books pay 15 percent
  • The price, in ten categories. Cross the threshold and the rate changes
  • Nothing else. No setup fee, no monthly subscription. The referral fee comes off each completed sale

The part that catches people is the second one, and specifically this: the new rate applies to the entire sale price, not just the amount above the line. That is what makes a one cent price change worth real money.

Six categories where crossing the line pays you

Four Walmart categories where raising your price above a threshold reduces what you keep
CategoryThe lineAt the lineOne cent aboveYou gain per unit
Jewelry and Precious Metals$25020%, keep $200.005%, keep $237.51$37.51
Watches$1,50015%, keep $1,275.003%, keep $1,455.01$180.01
Outdoor Power Tools$50015%, keep $425.008%, keep $460.01$35.01
Compact Appliances$30012%, keep $264.008%, keep $276.01$12.01
Indoor and Outdoor Furniture$20015%, keep $170.0010%, keep $180.01$10.01
Electronics Accessories$10015%, keep $85.008%, keep $92.01$7.01

The jewelry number is the most dramatic, but electronics accessories is the one with volume behind it.

At $100.00 you pay 15 percent and keep $85.00. At $100.01 you pay 8 percent and keep $92.01. That is $7.01 a unit for a one cent price change.

At 500 units a month, that is $3,505 a month, or $42,060 a year, on a $50,000 monthly revenue base.

Four categories where crossing the line costs you

Four Walmart categories where raising your price above a threshold reduces what you keep

This is the half nobody writes about, and it is where the money quietly leaks.

CategoryThe lineAt the lineOne cent aboveYou lose per unitBreak even at
Beauty, Health and Personal Care$108%, keep $9.2015%, keep $8.51$0.69$10.82
Baby Products$108%, keep $9.2015%, keep $8.51$0.69$10.82
Grocery$158%, keep $13.8015%, keep $12.76$1.04$16.24
Apparel and Accessories$2010%, keep $18.0015%, keep $17.01$0.99$21.18

Here is how it happens in practice. A beauty seller moves a product from $9.99 to $10.49 to cover a supplier increase. Reasonable decision, made in isolation.

At $9.99 they kept $9.19. At $10.49 they keep $8.92.

They raised the price and their take-home fell. To actually earn what $9.99 was earning, they need to be at $10.81.

Nobody catches this, because the fee is deducted after the fact and the price change looks like it worked.

Which side of the line should you sit on?

Knowing where the line sits is the easy half. The decision is what you do with it, and there are only three answers.

  • Cross up and bank it. Highest margin per unit, no change to your competitive position
  • Cross up and pass it through. Price just above the line, use the fee saving to fund a lower price than a competitor sitting below it, and take Buy Box share instead of margin
  • Stay under. In the four trap categories, and in any category where the price above the line loses you the sale

That is a decision per category, not one policy for the catalogue. If you want a second pair of eyes on where your SKUs sit against these lines, that is the kind of thing our Walmart account management team looks at first.

What Walmart charges beyond the referral fee

Worth stating plainly, because the referral fee is not the whole picture.

  • No setup fee and no monthly subscription fee, per Walmart Marketplace
  • Walmart Fulfillment Services carries separate fulfillment and storage fees if you use it
  • Walmart Connect advertising is separate again

If you sell across more than one marketplace, our eCommerce management services page covers how those stack up against the cost of running the accounts.

The two minute check to run today

  1. Open Walmart’s fee schedule and find your category
  2. Note whether it has a price threshold. Ten do. If yours does not, your rate is flat and none of this applies
  3. List your SKUs within 10 percent of the line, either side. Those are the only ones where this decision is live
  4. For each, work out the take-home both sides of the line. Price times rate, subtracted from price. That is all the arithmetic there is
  5. Decide per SKU: bank it, pass it through, or stay under

Do this before your next price change, not after.

Where That Leaves You

Walmart publishes all of this. The schedule is free, public, and takes two minutes to read. The advantage isn’t in knowing the numbers, it’s in pricing against them deliberately, category by category, instead of finding out after the fee is deducted. Our Walmart account management team starts every new account with a free 48-hour audit.
